"Serengeti Monarch" |

The dominating Serengeti sun descends in the African sky as the afternoon draws to an uneasy close. Palpable tension commands the plain as the pride of lionesses appear languid, yet subtly shuffle position and exchange pensive glances. The cubs are discouraged from their usually accepted romping. It’s as if they all are waiting for something to occur, but none know what may come. Casually, a lioness casts a tentative eye to the rise thirty yards distant. His battle-worn profile chiseled against the reddened sky, the sovereign male seems removed as he studies the grassy horizon. We wonder of his steady gaze as we steal upon him in a moment of absorbed introspection. What weighs on the mind of this magnificent King of Beasts? Mere distraction? A gazelle which has wandered from its herd. Something else out of place in the otherwise ordered co-existence of life on the savannah. Is he simply mesmerized by the rippling grass, caught by the wind as it plays across his vast, open territory? Or is there something more? Something else brought on the wind.
